Which type of oil?
Kerosene is the grade of oil between diesel and petrol, also often known as paraffin or burning oil. It is in yellow in colour due to the Euromarker added to prevent duty evasion. It is used for all appliances with vapourising burners (e.g. Aga cooker) and most domestic appliances using pressure jet burners (most central heating boilers) Silvey also sell a premium grade, Betterburn, which is fragranced to reduce odours and has additives to enhance your burner performance and reduce oil consumption. Aga cookers are very sensitive to slight variations in kerosene and many of our customers find an enhanced performance and service interval by using Topanol additive.

Gas oil is the same fuel used by off road diesel engines. It is deep red in colour and although it has a higher calorific value than kerosene it is rarely used in domestic heating because it attracts 10.03 pence/litre Excise Duty (as of December 08) making it more expensive. Due to it's higher calorific value it is sometimes used to heat very large houses but usually with older systems.
